Social media and our smartphones are indispensable in this modern society. We get up and go to sleep with it. How is this ‘always being available’-phenomenon influencing our daily lives? Why is everyone hooked to it and why can’t we seem to live without it?
It’s becoming more common that a conversation gets interrupted by the sound of a notification on a smartphone. We even break up a conversation to answer a phone call or send a text. And when a conversation falls silent, it has become pretty natural to turn to our phones to check on the latest “news” or e-mails. And even though I don’t approve this behaviour, I’m also guilty of contributing to this asocial trend. There’s no other form than technology that induces more emotions than a smartphone. It increases the possibility to communicate, it’s very useful in case of emergencies but it can also cause irritation.
